Ganesha, a Hindu deity with the head of an elephant (the result of a run-in with Shiva) is the lord of beginnings, the remover of obstacles, the patron of artists, entrepreneurs and scholars. His blessings are traditionally invoked at the beginning of a new venture or enterprise. He is often depicted holding up one hand, palm outward, warding off fear.
